Sevilla (4/7) v Real Betis (11/2) – Sunday 3pm
El Clasico may be feisty, but the Seville derby makes that fixture look like a friendly match. The referee on duty, Carlos Velasco Carballo, is usually pretty happy to dish out the cards, handing out an average of 6.63 in the 16 games he’s officiated this season.
The card count across the last seven meetings in La Liga reads 12, 9, 8, 8, 8, 10, 8. At the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán alone, a whopping 23 cards have been shown in the past three league games. The 4/7 (William Hill) on over 6 match cards is a banker.
Real Betis are the seventh dirtiest team in the league, averaging just under 3 cards per match. This season they have received a total of 98 yellows and 4 second-yellows.
The away side actually come into the clash in the better form, and can make this competitive, but in front of a vociferous home crowd Sevilla should edge this. With both sides’ recent trend for goalmouth action, over 2.5 goals and over 6 cards (13/10) is tempting, however historically this fixture has not been full of goals.
As if the Betis players needed any extra motivation against their city rivals, Sevilla defender Adil Rami made some comments on Instagram earlier this week. He called the match a ‘pre-season game’, and said he hopes Betis get relegated and don’t return until 2045. Perhaps we’ll see a few late tackles on the Frenchman.
Carlos Velasco Carballo has awarded 98 yellow cards this term, with 57 of those given to the visiting team. Betis have received more cards than Sevilla in four of the last five league meetings; so back a repeat of that outcome on Sunday.

Interestingly, neither team has received a straight red card this season, but they have had nine men sent off between them. This ref has awarded eight red cards in his 16 games (seven second-yellows and one straight dismissal). The past 10 contests have seen nine red cards, so our second selection will be to back a player to receive his marching orders.
